(Online) Friends, Romans (Sheffielders), lend me your beers!

If there’s one thing I’ve found out about myself, it’s that I seem to act better under the spur of the moment. I had been having another iffy week after going to the organic garden the previous week. Missing this week I was again feeling crap. Then on Thursday night after a good night of Surreal FM gaming, Steve told me he was coming up to Sheffield to see his folks. This was a time I had been waiting for, previous experiences – admittedly from long ago – had put me off asking people if they’d like to meet up with me. This would be the big test as to whether I would just be the person who someone would be OK spending time online with but not any other time. I asked Steve via PM whether he would have spare time to spend for a meet up in the city centre. While not trying to sound like the desperate person, I may well have tried to play off it in the PM, so I started to worry a bit. I needn’t have done so, as Steve – being the fine fellow he is – said he’d love to. Not that things ever go smoothly though, certain factors started to worry me. I shouldn’t have though as a text on Friday night led to an arrangement to meet on Saturday afternoon.

It was pretty damn fantastic. We had a few drinks together, I played some of their Nintendo DS games and I also satisfied my fetish for watching people eat. Don’t worry about that last bit, it’s a private joke. :) It wasn’t ’special’ in the way that say, we went anywhere or did anything special. It was special for me as it helped me to realise that maybe it is possible to meet folk in the flesh and not hide behind the internet. Maybe I could hold myself together and not worry that I’ll bore them if I hit a quiet patch and have nothing to say.
We’ll see whether I can build on this from that day forward. Although it’s going to take some time, I’ve returned to being tired again this week. Oh well.
