The Other Week Addendum

Monday, November 28th, 2005

There are two things of note that I really should have added about last week, but I left it out because I was in a hurry to finish before the end.

During the train journey I went through several places that I’d never heard of before. While noticing the surroundings, it made me remember how much I enjoyed exploring and discovering new places. Also, when going through Wakefiled Kirkgate station, I noticed how most of the old station had become derelict, serving now as just some form of shelter. There were what seemed to be the original doors locked shut, and an old platform with parts of rail still intact, but never used. Now before you all start thinking I’m a trainspotter, just stop now OK? This is different as it wasn’t the train setting that was of interest, it was the building. You see while browsing the Sheffield Forum, I found an interesting topic on tunnels under the city and even bukers. Which in turn lead to pictures and a tour of the Manchester Communication Bunker that would be used in event of a nuclear attack on the country during the Cold War. Then from that it lead to sites based on Urban Exploration and the pictures that people have taken of old abandoned buildings around the country. It’s the actual abandonment that interests me, in some places I like to imagine that it is telling a story, plus it’s the style of the buildings which seems to interest me. I’m no architect anorak, but looking at this all is just really interesting and it also saddens me to see these building left to rot or get demolished for a cheap shitty housing estate.

Also, on the weekend after the trip I was staying at my gran’s house as you well know. On the Saturday I was tired, but on Sunday afternoon I suddenly felt like taking a walk in my gran’s local park. Seeing as I had charged the batteries on my digital camera only to not be allowed to take photos of the Xbox 360 Tour (BOO!), I decided to take some photos of the park instead. I have put the best ones up on Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalvado

Why this update talking about a week ago? Well I haven’t done much over the previous week that was anywhere near intresting enough to talk about. Difficult to imagine anything less interesting eh?

Friday, the moment of truth now would be the time to see if I could leave the safe borders of Sheffield on my own.

Making Silly Faces for Progress

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2005

The week started out pretty poorly, I had again lost my usual sleeping routine and on Monday I was starting to get worried that I might bail out. Luckily I sorted myself out and was able to get back to the right routine on Tuesday. It was on Wednesday morning, just after I visited the doctor’s surgery, that I decided to book my train tickets online. My reasoning was that it was booked and there was no way out. If I didn’t go I had wasted money (well there were cancellation fees and all to consider) and I didn’t want to do that now did I?

On Wednesday I awoke at 6:30am as usual. I didn’t feel that drowsy throughout the morning, which was a great sign that I was going to find getting to Unstone Grange easier. It might also mean Friday wouldn’t go without a hitch! I left the house at 1pm, which is earlier than usual. Although the other reason is that I have to take the bus and walk down a lonely country lane, and I wanted to be there as long as possible before leaving at 3:15pm before it gets dark! Yes I am a paranoid wimp aren’t I?

Unstone went well, I was able to mix together compost this week. The compost composed of year old dead leaves, sand and some stuff that the name escapes me. I think I heard that it came from someone’s chimney! I donned my flat cap and put on my best cock-er-ny child accent and went to work. It was hard work, especially when we had to transfer the contents from a barrel to a wheelbarrow, then I had to stir it all together. Much like mixing pastry if you will, thing is that it’s bigger. Every time I thought that it had all been mixed, more bits of leaf turned up!

The best thing about this week at Unstone was that for the first time it seemed I was coming out of my shell. I was accompanied by the person I was getting to know more and a new person. Usually my working is that I’m quiet at first with a person and I usually get to be OK and reasonably communicative. However with the introduction of a new person, I revert to being quiet again having to start the cycle again. This time I was quicker to get going, and even then I climbed my previous peak. For the first time I actually told a joke and pulled a comedy face in reaction to the endless mixing of the compost. Now this may not seem much, but to me it was great as I was finally starting to become the person I wanted to be like. As in the person I’m like with my family and the closest friends I’ve made on Xbox Live. This could be a turning point, I’ll definitely be looking forward to see if I can carry on.

Thursday was quiet, I decided that I would ask my gran if I could stop over. Her house has several bus services that are within minutes of each other. Where I live it’s once every half hour, and then it’s liable to be late or not turn up at all. That was something I didn’t want to happen as you might imagine having a train to catch. I slept in a little later after being tired from the previous day. Other than that, nothing to report.

If you want to find out what happened on Friday and my trip to Leeds, then read the next post. Oh the suspense!

The Xbox 360 Hour Tour in Leeds

Monday, November 21st, 2005

OK so I’ll spare you the log of my week for another entry. This is solely reserved for my impressions of the Xbox 360, which happens to be launched soon in the US and on December 2nd over here.

So what was the 360 Hour Tour? Well it was the usual demo pods with the HD TVs positioned around a small room with a screen with PR info being displayed at the back. In the centre of the room were four groups of four sofas placed in a square around HD TVs with a wired pad and game to play on. There was a DJ who looked really cool dude at the back, who was pumping out banging tracks! Which was banging man, those Microsoft boys know how to throw a party. Everyone was given a wristband and given an hour to walk around the room and play.

So what did I think then? Well the console looks as good or bad (depending on taste, I quite like it) as it does in the pictures. It seemed to be the size I was expecting it to be. The controller was pretty fantastic really, it felt good in the hand and the new smaller, lighter size was a joy to hold. The new shoulder buttons may take time to get used to, but it’s pretty much the same as the S controller.

Here are the games I played on, some I ignored because I didn’t like the look of them (cough EA, cough)

Project Gotham Racing 3: Well I have to say it was the favourite of mine. The cars handled well and it seemed to be tweaked to be slightly lighter. I was disappointed with some of the graphics on the 90% build that was on show. The jaggies looked worse, but that seemed more like an up-scaled picture like you get on an LCD monitor. To me this fueled the rumour that it wasn’t running at 720p resolution that Microsoft promised all games would run on. I’m sure they’ll fix it, or it may have been the TV. Some of the buildings looked more PGR2 than next gen. Again, having looked at Edge this issue just as I got in this evening, it seems to have improved. OK it’s not much of a leap over PGR2, but then it’s still a lot of fun. I’m also sure that it will be the same amount of fun over Live that PGR2 is.

Condemned: Criminal Origins – An impressive looking game, it was a slow starter on the tutorial, showing off the detective scanning and such. I got up to the part where you got a gun, with the enemies run about in the shadows avoiding you. This could well cause some scare factors for some. It seems like you might have a game of hide ‘n’ seek on your hands! It looked nice and all, however I’d like more natural skin tones rather than the “Doom 3 plasticine effect” that was present. Overall could be a good game, but not one I could play while under a time limit and standing up in a noisy room.

Kameo: Not a game I got to play much on, so I feel like it’s unfair to comment too much. It seemed a competent platformer, however I was left on a ball rolling bit after picking up the demo from someone else. Not knowing how to launch myself up the ramp properly didn’t help, so I left it at that.

Perfect Dark Zero: Not as bad as some might say it is. It felt very much like a spruced up Perfect Dark though. The cover move was good, but needed a strafe action, all I could do was aim and not move along the wall. Maybe it’s in there somewhere, but I couldn’t find it. I didn’t try the roll move much, but it didn’t seem as bad as I thought it would be. The rest is pretty solid but not too special, with a typical protection mission and a boss battle to deal with.

Gun: Blurgh! It’ll no doubt be a shit PS2/Xbox game too. Not worth the £45 they’ll be asking for it. Not even worth £30 if you ask me!

Need for Speed Most Wanted: Typical Need for Speed with the loose handling. The cars seem to have inertia compared to the last games, but it’s still no improvement.

Call Of Duty 2: It’s Call of Duty again. My PC runs it at that res and looks just as good. Which is either a compliment or not that impressive depending on how you see it. Not worth the money they’ll be asking for it.

King Kong: Not that impressed with what I played. The FPS bits are OK and can be pretty clever in execution at times, but the Kong bits were a bit average. Now I realise that you’ll all be saying that its a Michel Ancel game and that makes it brilliant etc. Well that doesn’t wash with me. Beyond Good & Evil is good but I feel overrated, and it doesn’t automatically make it a great game. I’ll stand by my comments for the other versions of the game too by the way.

Dead or Alive 4: Didn’t seem much different from other Dead or Alive games. Then again the demo wouldn’t allow for a CPU battle, and no one would play against me :(

Tiger Woods: It’s Tiger Woods, with prettier graphics. Oh you want more? Well erm… his trousers looked good.

Overall, I would say lay off the 360 until next year. There were perhaps two or three games I would get the system with, but then I wouldn’t be too sure on the long term appeal of anything other than PGR3. We shall see what the developers truly have to make of the machine next year. Hopefully it will be the bigger leap we were expecting. MS should have held off the launch until the time when developers could get to grips with the machine and show off it’s power properly.

The Headache leading to the Headrow
